Galen performed experiments on live monkeys and dissected dead monkeys and pigs but Avicenna instead did dissection of human bodies as Herophilus had done in 3rd century BC Alexandria.


Ahmad ibn Abi al-Ash’ath in 959 dissected a lion’s stomach while the lion was still alive to examine how the stomach worked.
