In 1242, Ibn al-Nafis discovered that blood circulates between the heart and the lungs.
This is called the minor circulation of the blood.
He worked as a physician in Cairo, but was born and educated in Damascus. He wrote of his discovery that blood returning from the lungs went into a separate chamber of the heart than the blood that was pumped to the rest of the body.
Galen of Pergamon had been wrong in thinking that blood was destroyed by the body and did not return. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18481505/
