buildings in Shibam built of sun-baked (not kiln-baked) brick
16TH CENTURY MUSLIM SKYSCRAPERS?
Buildings, some as tall as 30 meters (the height of a typical modern mixed-use 9 story building) were built of sun-dried brick in the 1500’s in Sibham in what is now Yemen.
The bricks had a coating to protect the bricks from the rain. Many of the buildings collapsed in the past and have been repaired.
Sun-baked bricks have very little strength, so the structure probably has very very thick walls, which reduces the interior space.
The tallest of these was less than 20% of the height of Lincoln Cathedral in England, completed 200 years earlier in 1311, which reached a height of 160 metres.
